Juayúa is a small town in the city of Sonsonate, El Salvador. Located 80 kilometers west of San Salvador, its climate is cool and pleasant due to the mountains that surround it. Juayúa is a pre-Columbian Pipil town and apparently its name would mean “River of Purple Orchids,” although it is also said to come from Cuahua, Xuayua and Juayúa, of Nahualt origin, meaning “where there are trees,” or “in the woods” due to its roots “Cahuit” and “Hua”, which mean “has trees.”
Juayuá is part of “The Flowers Route“, and is a must for tourists, as it offers a wide range of entertainment. Among the main attractions are the greenery of the coffee plantations, its gastronomy, handicrafts and the waters that sprout from the mountains that surround it. Los Chorros de La Calera are four different waterfalls that can be explored one after the other, and are part of the “Route of the Seven Waterfalls“, one of the most attractive destinations of this town.
At the center of the village there is a church dedicated to the “Black Christ,” considered miraculous. During the weekends, the famous Gastronomic festival is held, one of the most popular activities among tourists who visit Juayúa. Another interesting attraction is the Conga Bus, a bus with two decks that takes a tour of the place with music on board.
