Named “the capital of ecotourism” or “the bride of Honduras,” La Ceiba makes us travel to a place with a festive atmosphere, surrounded by nature. Although the foundation of this city goes back to 1877, its development is the result of the banana activity in the 20th century, being a port city for the export of bananas to North America.
Nowadays, you can enjoy the restored old dock and a boardwalk called Paseo de los Ceibeños, as well as the Swinford Park, located in Mazapán, in the center of the city, formerly the offices of the banana company, where railway machines are displayed in the middle of a garden. The city also offers a Butterfly Museum, with a collection of more than 19,300 specimens of butterflies and insects from Honduras, and 140 other countries.
Pico Bonito stands majestically in front of the airport, famous for its height of 2,435 meters above sea level, and for its uneven and rugged topography that gives it its name. Pico Bonito is the largest park in Honduras with high biodiversity of wildlife species such as jaguar, ocelot, monkey, tepezcuinte, coatí, toucan, parrot, tapir, quetzal, iguana, and wild pig, some of them in danger of extinction. Among the emblematic species of flora, we can find mahogany, cedar, round, granadillo, rosita, san juan, areno, laurel and marapolán. For lovers of hiking and other ecotourism activities you can practice bird watching, and skirting the park down the Cangrejal River sliding between imposing rocks result of the geological formation of this beautiful country; forming rapids that win the hearts of adrenaline lovers when practicing category 5 rafting.
The Garífuna communities of Sambo Creek and Corozal, bordering the city, are located on the sea shore, offering varied dishes of Garifuna cuisine in all its splendor.
At Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, you will enjoy boat or panga tours through the canals, accompanied by the bustle of howler monkeys, white faced monkeys, crocodiles, turtles, wild ducks, water cock and possibly some manatee. Another charming place where the sky kisses with vegetation is the Laguna del Cacao, ideal for kayaking. Then relax in the hot springs with the option of celebrating a night out in the city.
